13 Phrases or Words I Over-Use (stolen from Jennifer):

1. "Dude." Yep, I'm a guy from the 80s apparently, because I say Dude ALL the time. I call girls dude. I call guys dude. I call my baby dude. I use dude as a statement, a question, a comment, and an exclamation.

2. "Sure thing." I find myself saying this a lot in response to a thanks for something I should have done anyhow. Example: I hand my boss 6 weeks of overdue time sheets, and when she thanks me I say, "Sure thing!"

3. "No problem." Because, really, I HATE for people to think anything they are asking of me is a problem. This is a sure sign of an annoying people pleaser: the excessive use of the phrase 'No problem', most notedly when something really IS sort of a problem, but I refuse to say so.

4. "Keep me posted." It's sort of my all-encompassing "I care about what you're sharing, but I don't really know what to say now, so please just keep me up to date on the happenings." statement.

5. "I got nothin'." Meaning...yeah...seriously...I got nothin'.

6. "I kid! I kid!" I'm a sarcastic hooker. I love the sarcasm. Sarcasm makes the world go 'round. It drives my husband nuts...the level of sarcasm occuring when my whole family gets together. But what I DO NOT love is people taking my sarcasm wrong and thinking me mean. Hence, the phrase "I kid! I kid!" came to rest in my vocabulary.

7. "Hang in there." I say this in all sad/bad/difficult situations. It's so meaningless, but I mean it to be meaningful. Yeah.

8. "Some day, a BIG IRISHMAN will kick your ass. And then you'll be sorry." This one is reserved for my husband. It's nonsense, but it's funny nonsense, and it cracks me up to say it to him when he's being purposely annoying.

9. "I don't care. Where/whatever you want." Being the Queen of Indecision means I say this a lot. A LOT.

10. "The other day Luca..." fill in the blank. Yep, I am officially that ANNOYING mom who thinks everyone in the WORLD is just DYING to hear all about how Luca ate cake/figured out how to blow raspberries/body surfed down the stairs feet first.

13 Things I Was Doing This Time Last Year:

1. Waiting to go into labor. Duh. My due date was May 6 according to my calcualtions, May 8 according to the Dr's. I was not one of those pregnant women who was eager to get it over with. In fact, I really enjoyed pregnancy. BUT, I was getting anxious because one other thing I was doing was...

2. ...prepping for Darrick to graduate! He got his Bachelors on May 11th. So you can see why I was getting anxious by May 1st last year...all I kept seeing was a mental picture of my VERY pregnant self walking down the steps at the crowded ASU graduation and my water breaking EVERYWHERE. Or, me being in the hospital mid-delivery right when Darrick was supposed to be walking. Thank goodness it all worked out!

3. Going into Last Minute Purchase mode. This is where soon-to-be parents have everything they need, and then some, but run about buying random crap just because maybe they need it or it looks cool. Hotsling we never used b/c it was a scratchy fabric? Check. Yet another package of onesies? Check. A second diaper bag, more crib sheets, and a few rattles? Check, check, check.

4. Checking for signs of labor. Everyone told me all the things I should look for...and none of them appeared until the night I actually went into labor. Even my water didn't break until 8 cm.

5. Trying desperately to FOCUS at work and get loose ends tied up.

6. Daydreaming about maternity leave.

7. Worrying about how we would afford maternity leave.

8. Washing baby clothes and car seat fabrics and bassinets and blankets and more.

9. Going out on long walks every night, and then envisioning how the scenario would play out if I went into labor on some random street in my neighborhood and had to call for help.

10. Bouncing on the yoga ball. And bouncing. And more bouncing. The yoga ball bouncing helps move the baby down and into the right position. Plus, it's comfy.

11. Wondering if Luca would end up being Luca or if we'd change our minds last minute. Also wondering what color hair and eyes she would have. My guesses: brown and green. The realilty: blonde and blue.

12. Eating far more Snickers Blizzards than a normal human being should be allowed to consume.

13. Dreaming of my baby.

Today's Topic: 13 Foods I Just Won't Eat.

1. Beef. That's right, I am throwing my trump card out right from the start. I've never really cared for beef, so when I was 17 I decided not to eat it anymore. I specifically remember my last meal that included beef...it was a Kobe beef hamburger when I was in Tokyo the summer before my senior year in high school. At least I went out with style!

2. Seafood of any variety. And do NOT even get me started on people who claim to be vegetarian (which, btw, I am not) but still eat fish. Fish is meat, people. It's meat.

3. Pickles. My husband hates that I hate pickles. And, he also loves that I hate pickles because it means more for him.

4. Olives. This is another food my husband LOVES and I loathe. I just do NOT get olives.

5. Mustard. It's not for me. It's yellow. It looks like newborn baby turd. No thanks, really.

6. Tripe. And, by proxy, menudo.

7. Pig's feet. Or ears. Or snouts. Or anything, really. I don't eat pork products. The ONLY exception I will make the the occassional well cooked (read: burnt) piece of bacon with the fatty parts removed.

8. Eggs in any condition other than baked into something, scrambled until they are browned and dry, or hard boiled. Egg yolk running all over my plate and soaking my toast? Um...no.

9. Cooked mushrooms. I can stomach them sometimes if they are raw and in a salad, or if they are part of a veggie burger. But most of the time mushrooms freak me out. They look like little penis heads, and the dark fiber things under the cap are just not right.

10. Beets. I just am not feeling beets. It kind of pisses me off when I go somewhere and they put them in my salad. I want to pick them out, place them in my napkin, and ask for a trade...one tomato slice for each beet I return.

11. Grits. I have this theory about places that serve grits. I think it's just this HUGE moneymaking venture for them. Think about how cheap grits must be. I'm positive they start out powdered. Then think of how much they tack onto the cost of your breakfast because it comes with grits. THEN think of how many people say, "Yeah, I want a number 5, but could I get it with hashbrowns instead of grits?" and then the Waffle House waitress, who just finished the overnight shift at Christy's Cabaret next door, tacks an extra $2.00 on the bill. Viola...Waffle House just hosed your ass!

12. Yams. Or sweet potatoes. Are these the same thing? It doesn't matter, really, because I won't eat them either way. I LOVE potatoes, but I do NOT want them sweet. Ew.

13. Coconut. "I'm a little coconut...sitting on my cocobutt...everybody laughs at me...because I ama a nut you see!" Cute song nonwithstanding, I despise coconut. And it REALLY pisses me off when someone ruins a perfectly good cake/candy/cookie with coconut shavings.

Go ahead...tell me what things YOU won't eat.

Thursday 13, #5

It's late and I'm feeling lazy, but I wanted to keep up with this routine. So, this is going to be an easy Thursday 13 for me: 13 Photographs I Love:

1. Luca Bunny

2. Sweet Ruby

3. Kissing my new baby on our first day home from the hospital. We were so tired, so we spent all day lying in bed together napping and staring at her in amazement.

4. This one just makes me feel all warm and happy.

5. THE belly about 3 weeks before Luca was born.
\
6. This is not the greatest picture of me, but it's taken the moment Luca was handed to me. I think, even though it's blurry, it catches my joy. I was saying, "I can't believe I did that!"

7. My little girl...my heart.

8. First Mother's Day with my Daddy.

9. I love the glow we have...just married!!!

10. Hippie girl on her first camping trip. Shirt by me, amazing eyes courtesy of her dad.

11. He didn't know I was taking this picture, but I love how it captures a moment in time that's so ordinary and yet so special.

12. We're dirty. We're unshowered. I'm not even wearing makeup...hell, I'm fairly certain I hadn't washed my face the night before. But...here we are!

13. My Grandma came to visit for her 90th birthday, so we got some pictures together. Luca is her 7th great grandchild.

And, a few bonus ones because I couldn't stop at 13!
BONUS! First smile caught on film. Darrick can't understand why I love this picture so much, and says she looks like an old man. I think it's one of the most beautiful moments of my life.

BONUS! I just love this.

Thursday 13, #4.

This Week: 13 Movies I Love, in no particular order.

1. My Girl. I remember watching this with my best friend when it came out, and we bawled and bawled and bawled. I laughed as well, particularly at lines like "Go away, and don't come back for 5 to 7 days!". If you don't know what I'm talking about, you need to see it.

2. Empire Records. You just really can't go wrong. It's the epitome of the 90s...grungy, angsty teens/early 20s beautiful people work in record store that is being bought out by mega corporation. Angsty employees decide to rebel with an impromptu concert fundraiser after one of them gambles away the savings in Vegas. Side plot: hot guy with full lips and long-ish hair is in love with hot but sheltered perfect girl (Liv Tyler), but SHE has plans to lose her virginity to Sexy Rexy. Oh, AND it has Ethan Embry in it, which ALWAYS makes for a good movie.

3. Jawbreaker. This is a cult classic, starring Rose McGowan and the Noxema Girl who's now married to McSteamy. It's the classic high school campy drama complete with bitchy chicks in short skirts and an ugly-duckling makeover. But it's snarkier and smarter than most.

4. Finding Neverland. This is a fabulous, amazing, poignant, touching movie. Johnny Depp in one of his finest performances. Kate Winslet is etheral and amazing as always. And little Freddie Highmore is INSANELY good. This is a movie you NEED to watch...bring tissues.

5. What's Eating Gilbert Grape. Johhny Depp again, as the adult son of an incredibly obese woman who is homebound. He takes care of the family, which includes Leonardo DiCaprio as a mentally ill teen who hides in trees and climbs water towers. Enter Juliette Lewis as the out-of-towner who Johnny's character falls for, as well as the most interesting use of a crane in a movie.

6. This Boy's Life. If #5 doesn't convince you that Leonardo is a good actor, this movie should. He costars with Robert De Niro and Ellen Barkin as his evil step-dad and his desperate mom. Look, Leonardo is 19 in this movie (although he looks 13) and he holds his own acting with De Niro. That has to say something about his true acting abilities. The movie is based on a memoir, and is just stunning and sad and amazing and beautiful. There are some gritty parts and some parts that are hard to watch. Another movie you want to bring tissues to.

7. The Squid and the Whale. This is another cult classic...or, someday it will be. It's a hilarious and jaded look at an intellectual New England family going through a divorce. The acting, the dialogue, the amazing comedic timing of even the youngest actor...it's not to be missed. Ignore the ridiculous title and rent this sucker.

8. Love, Actually. Just...sigh. I love this movie, actually.

9. Dear Frankie. This one also is a tear jerker, but a feel good one. It's acted fabulously, the story is just great...it'll leave you feeling warm.

10. Brokedown Palace. Claire Danes and Kate Beckinsale star as two girls taking 'the trip of a lifetime' to Thailand. They end up in a prison for smuggling drugs. This follows their struggle to gain their freedom with the help of an American attorney, as well as the metamorphasis of their friendship. It's kind of almost sorta a chick flick, but it's got appeal to all audiences.

11. Best in Show. I know a lot of people would cite other Christopher Guest films as his best, but I think Best is Show is my favorite. This movie is insanely funny and witty and just a good time. The cast is totally on point and the script is killer. It may help that I love dogs...

12. Stealing Beauty. Another Liv Tyler movie from the mid-90s. She plays a teen who goes to a small Italian village where her deceased mother spent a lot of time. She reunites with people her mother wrote about in her diary, and goes on a mission of sorts to lose her virginity. The story is good, but the cinematography (for mid-90s) was so captivating.

13. Dazed and Confused. Yeah, it's not exactly oscar-worthy. The acting in some places downright sucks, and the plot is...uh...a bunch of senior boys in high school chase down freshman boys to beat their asses with paddles while a bunch of other people get high and plan a party. But with quotable quotes like "Fry like bacon, you little freshman piggies!", "Wipe that face off your head, bitch!", "Dominany male monkey mother fucker.", and "You cool, man?"....how could you even THINK of passing this gem up? Rent it. Watch it. Laugh. Watch again and get some more of the jokes you missed the first time. You potheads and former potheads will want to have the pause button handy so you can laugh knowingly in that pothead throaty laugh you have as you retell stories about, "This one time, when we were smoking a bowl..."

Have some favorite movies that didn't make my list? Share them with me, but they better be good...and don't even THINK I will publish your comment if they star Jim Carrey or Nicholas Cage.

Thursday 13, Version 3.0

This week's 13 is dedicated 13 things I wish I was good at but am not.

1. Dancing. I am your classic white girl with no rhythm. I do the 'white girl shuffle'. YOU know the one...it involves some alternating knee bends, some hips swivels, and a little lasso action above the head. But...at least I'm having fun!

2. Hiding my emotions. I know I suck at this because people ALWAYS know when I am mad or sad. I may think I am hiding it well, and then, without fail, my boss will be all "What's that face about?" right in the middle of a staff meeting, and I know I am busted.

3. Making decisions. If you ever want to go out to eat with me, just name the place. Don't ask ME to pick the place, or we won't be eating until sometime the next week. I'm this way with everything. It drives Darrick SO crazy. When we were in childbirth classes while I was pregnant, they gave us a sliding scale question about pain medication in labor. One end of the scale was "I will use medication without a doubt.", and the other end was "I will not use medication no matter what." We were each supposed to answer separately about what decision we envisioned, and then see how well our answers meshed. His check mark for me was in the "I will labor without medication as long as I am comfortable, but will use medication when the pain gets intense." My check mark was next to "I am undecided." Needless to say, he was not shocked to see my answer and I was made fun of for weeks for it.

4. Singing. I used to have a really good voice. And then puberty hit and I took up smoking. So long, good voice.

5. Public speaking. I am getting better at this since my job involves a lot of presentations and public speaking events. But, from time to time, I still get nerves and my voice starts shaking and I sound like I am going to cry.

6. Telling people the truth when it's not what they want to hear. I will be the first person to tell you if there is spinach in your teeth, but I may not ever tell you if that thing you said to me that one time really did hurt my feelings.

7. Saying no. I have a really hard time telling people no, whether it's family, my boss, my friends....pretty much everyone but my husband! ;)

8. Cooking. I like to cook sometimes. I really enjoy baking more. I just wish I was a better cook. I need a bigger repertoire.

9. Skiing. The one time I tried, I ended up coming down the mountain in a plastic toboggan pulled by ski patrol. You can read about it
here.

10. Remembering movie quotes. Lyrics to songs I have down. But I have never been a movie-quote-rememberer. I'm always the chick who people quote movies to and I stare blankly at them and blink slowly.

11. Standing up for myself. This kind of goes with 'saying no', and kind of does not (see where the indecisiveness plays into my life?). I have a hard time defending myself against attacks...instead I shut down and/or internalize and take things personally even if I should not.

12. Sports. Whatever. Stupid athletic jerk heads.

13. Chemistry. I have come to the conclusion I will never be good at chemistry, which sucks because I secretly would kind of like to become a nurse midwife, but without being able to pass chemistry, it's never going to happen.

What do YOU wish you were good at?

Thursday 13, Week 2

My Thursday 13 for this week is inspired by my poll about Presidential candidates. Here we go:

13 Questions I've Asked Myself Recently

1. Who visits my blog, and how well do I know them? This question was inspired by the fact that MORE respondents to my poll chose McCain than any other candidate. This flies in the face of logic, which would tell me that most of my blog readers would be flaming liberals like myself.

2. How could I forget to wear sunscreen? I am a self-professed sun freak. Being fair skinned with freckles and an Arizona native, I have learned that sunscreen is my best friend. Better yet, sun BLOCK, which provides better protection if my memory of that one article I read in Allure while waiting at the Dr. 5 years ago serves me right. So WHY of WHY did I forget sunscreen on the very day I had a 4 hour outdoor event for work? And WHY did they not provide shade between the prime sunshine hours of 10 am and 2 pm?

3. Why is it that some people can eat whatever and be skinny, and I am not one of them?

4. Wouldn't it be cool if someone would invent a self-cleaning toilet? I mean, really...I could do without cleaning a toilet ever again. Couldn't you?

5. What's Luca going to look like when she gets older? Part of me hopes she stays long, lean, blonde, and adorable. And another part of me is terrified she will. Is is weird that I'm worried about boys already?!?!?!

6. How many jelly beans can I get away with eating before they make me gain weight? I think I heard one pound = about 24,000 calories? So it seems reasonable that if I eat a handful of the little devils a day I should be ok....?

7. How much shit talking REALLY goes on in this world? I was just realizing the other day that shit talking is like a way of life for some people. It seems that negativity and nastiness are like a hobby. Very odd. I'm not innocent. Oh no, indeed I also shit talk. But I try to keep it to a minimum because I know how it feels to be the one being talked about, and it SUCKS. But sometimes I wonder just WHO is talking about me and WHAT is being said.

8. Should I become an organ donor? This is out of left field, sure. But from time to time I start to think about it. I am currently not one, which seems odd because I am the type of person who most would expect to be a donor. But something about it doesn't sit right with me. I think I have been scared by those stories you hear of Drs removing someone from machines to use their organs when really the person may have been able to recover. Does this really happen? Or am I as dumb as the people who believed the whole 'weapons of mass destruction and Al-Qaida is tied with Saddam' crap?

9. How can people not believe in evolution? We all had tails and gills in the womb...and we BREATHED WATER. Hello? People? Wake up.

10. Am I ready for another one? I've been thinking a lot about baby #2, and Darrick and I have started to talk about when we want to start *ahem* working on that. He's ready whenever, but I want to lose some weight first. But are we REALLY ready? Now that Luca's sleeping a good 10 hours a night and eating solids and starting to wean, we're considering jumping back into the game? Yes. I believe we are.

11. Why can't the window to my office open? It's sunny, the sky is blue, orange blossoms and palo verde are in bloom, and it's 80 degrees out. I think it should be illegal to have to work in an office on a day like today.

12. Why can't dogs live forever? It seems to unfair that such wonderful critters have such a short time to be on this earth. Perhaps I will make Miss Piggy live forever by having her stuffed when she dies?

13. How did I get so lucky? A cute husband, a precious baby, a good job, a wonderful family....I don't know what I did to deserve this, but DAMN! I love it.

Thursday 13.

I'm not sure who started this, but my friend Jennifer told me about it. Every Thursday you do a 13 point list about something, and this week I'm stealing hers and making it mine. So here's my Thursday 13.

Thirteen Crushes I've Had, From Birth to Present:

1. Ray Saenz in 4th grade. He was just so stinking cute, and I
thought he was digging on me too, especially once my mom cut me some
rockin' bangs which I would curl in rows and spray with my Aquanet.
And then, he bent over to get a drink from the drinking fountain and
I kicked him in the balls. Crush over.

2. Elvis. WAAAAAAY before my time, but hot none-the-less.

3. Dylan McKay, aka Luke Perry in 90210. He was a bad boy, but had a
sensitive side. And he had sideburns that went on for days!

4. Nathan in middle school. His dad was a lawyer on the back of the
Yellow Pages and he had the best curly hair. We dated for about 2
weeks, and then Operation Desert Storm broke us up. I was adamantly
opposed (as much as an 11 year old can oppose a war), and he was all
for it. It was painfully clear we had to go our separate ways. I
imagine he is working somewhere in the Bush Whitehouse now.

5. L.L. Cool J. That body. Those lips. He was the source of many a
white-girl goes with black-guy fantasy when I was in middle school.
And he's STILL dead sexy.

6. Brad Pitt. Before he was ****BRAD PITT****. I had a picture of him
thumbtacked to my wall by my bed. He was dreamy back before he was a
philanderer.

7. Stephen Dorff. He's a loser with no career now. Whatever. He was
sexy and broody and slightly naughty back then. I used to dream of
being an actress and him being my leading man and falling in love
with me. Le sigh.

8. Wade. He was friends with my brothers. He was older. He was tall.
He knew how to do skateboarding tricks. He drove an old blue Kharman
Ghia. He called me 'Katebetty' or 'Wednesday'. He smelled like
cigarettes, motor oil, and Irish Spring. And he hooked up with my 2
best friends before marrying a third. Luckily, I was over him after
he hooked up with friend 2, so setting him up with his wife was
actually my idea. Still....that was one of those BIG crushes you'll
always remember.

9. Lennox Lewis. Not 'The Apprentice' Lennox....the Heavyweight Champ
Lennox. The body, the power, the dreads, the accent. He made ME
sweaty!

10 and 11. The Klitchko brothers. Eastern European. Gorgeous. And
well educated. They each have a Master's degree and speak multiple
languages. Boxing's finest imports.

12. Gavin Rossdale. Before he became Gwen's bitch, you know
you thought he was sexy too. Same for Guy Richie pre-Madonna's bitch.

13. My husband. Whatever, it's cheesy and I'm lame. But he can't be
beat. Best. Crush. EVER.

Who are your 13 Crushes? Post them on your blog and let me know, and I'll put a link to you!
